How Templar Wines began

Starting in 2008, Templar Wines was quick to develop relationships with high quality smaller wineries and agencies who want their wines consumed in restaurants, wine bars gastronomic venues and Hotels, as opposed to supermarkets.

Importing wine since 2011, Max has developed relations with over 15 wineries across Europe. Working with specialist importers, wines are also sourced from the new world to enable Templar Wines to put together very relevant, high quality wine lists to satisfy even the most demanding clientele.

In 2014 Chad Christian joined Templar Wines from Hotel du Vin where he spent seven years honing his Sommelier skills. Chad works as a wine consultant for us, creating masterful wine lists for pubs and restaurants across the South Coast. It’s a full time job yet he still found time to obtain his WSET wine diploma in 2020.

In the Summer of 2018 Templar Wines welcomed Ian Murray into the team. Ian has brought a wealth of wine and on-trade experience with him, having spent over 20 years working with Majestic Wines, Conviviality and Matthew Clark, latterly specialising in wholesale wine development.

The past 6 years has been focused on sourcing sustainable, organic, biodynamic and vegan friendly wines to the extent that over 50% of our portfolio fits into one of these categories.

Chad and Ian play a key role in marrying the wine lists together with the food menus. By discussing menu details with the chefs, implementing staff training and designing informative wine lists, the aim is to get each customers wine and food working together to produce a truly gastronomic experience.

Max said “Our evolving wine range and having a fully stocked depot in Poole, with, if necessary, daily feeds from our bonded warehouse facilities in Southampton has seen our turnover grow 54% from 2019 to 2023. Being local and understanding the seasonal trade has also been a key factor why restaurants like dealing with us. Small things like having no minimum drop on your standard delivery day, may not mean much in the Summer, but in January when everyone is watching the pennies, it really does help. We are continuing to source new wines. In 2022, we started importing award winning Rock Ferry organic wines from New Zealand, in April 2023 we imported a brand new French range by Boutique winemaker Bruno Andreu”

Templar Wines has now evolved to become the largest Independent Specialist Wine merchant in Dorset. Well into its second decade of trading, Templar wines aim is to be the preferred choice for all on-trade  gastro-led businesses in Dorset and the New Forest.

Why Templar Wines?

If you are serious about food in your business, then wine becomes an essential differentiator to make good restaurants, great restaurants. At Templar Wines we select wines that will complement your food, deliver great value and ultimately get your customers raving about the wines and coming back for more.

The journey starts with a full business review of what needs to be achieved in terms of sales, reputation, margins, food and wine pairing, merchandising and staff knowledge.

Comprehensive checks are made to ensure the wine list delivers the correct gross profit, price points and variety of wines by grape, region and country.

Then comes the wine list, which is prepared and printed by Templar Wines, as the essential tool for uplifting wine sales.

Full staff training is given before the new wine menu goes live, with additional “buzz” sessions available throughout the year.

Deliveries are made directly from our depot to your business or restaurant. Deliveries are made every week day with no minimum purchase in South Dorset, and to businesses all over the UK mainland where a modest minimum delivery may apply.

The journey culminates with full after-sales advice given on stock levels, staff training and regular full wine sales reviews. All are offered in a concerted effort to improve wine knowledge, sales revenue and positive customer feedback. The net result is that we grow our businesses together.

“There is absolutely no compromise on quality. Satisfaction is guaranteed or your money back”
