Green Values
Recycling
At Templar Wines as part of our green values, we recycle all paper and cardboard packaging. All invoicing, unless requested, is electronically sent not to save our print costs, but primarily to save the postage delivery foot print.
Our mail-order wine boxes are made from 70% Recycled paper and are themselves 100% recyclable. All bottles used in tastings are 100% recycled
Sourcing Wine
We try to source as many wines as possible from the EU and are constantly working with our hauliers to minimize the physical movement of wine. 95% of the volume of our wine bought from the Old World (EU) is taken directly from the winery to Templar Wines.
We use bonded facilities which require whole pallet movement, again to reduce the amount of individual wine movements. It is always a balancing act between being green and not compromising on core values regarding the quality of wine, especially when it comes to deep-water shipping.
Essentially wine is best harvested, produced and bottled at the winery, where production and quality can be strictly monitored. The downside to this is that wine then has to be palletised transported and shipped, which is not the most efficient means of transport. Bulk transporting in flexi-tanks and bottling in the UK, is greener providing the bottles and closures are also produced and sourced from the UK.
In our opinion, there can be a drop off in quality when bottling from flexi-tanks, which sometimes means those wines do not pass our quality tests. We are pleased that our South African South Coast Social wines, Californian Wildwood White Zinfandel, and our single serve still wines are all of exceptional quality and are bottled in the UK.
Organic Wines
More and more we are sourcing organically grown wines made using sustainable wine-producing methods. Our Vrignaud Chablis, Domaine Tholomies, Sepp, Chateau D’Eau, Chateau Maucoil, Caiarossa, Pergolaia and Adobe Reserva ranges are all organically produced and have been available since 2015. Wines such as Fedele Organic Nero D’Avola and Cattarato from Sicily, Integro Primitivo, Esporao Colheita along with 3rd Rock Sauvignon from New Zealand have all been added in the last 12 months. Watch this space as we are determined to add more Organic and Biodynamic wines in the coming year.
Vegetarian and Vegan Wines
It is clear that more and more restaurant clientele are demanding Vegetarian and Vegan dishes. Much of this demand is driven by the UK public deciding that their food and dietary requirements must be sustainable in terms of agriculture, and animal welfare and be kinder to our planet in terms of pollution and Global warming. Results from Statista.com in Jan 2023 indicated there are around 3% of the UK, who describe themselves as Vegan and around 6% as Vegetarian. Similar results were published by Yougov last year also. If you take London out of the statistics, Veganism in the rural South is around 2%. Where the statistics get interesting from our point of view, is the dietary habits of 18-34 year olds. These are the next generation of wine drinkers! Here there is a greater adoption of Vegetarian/Veganism approximately double the national average. With a considerable percentage of meat eaters often having meat free meals for a variety of reasons from “just fancied it” or “I am actively trying to reduce meat from my diet” to “my vegan partner prepared the meal”. Yougov stated that 12% of 18-34 year olds in 2023 were Flexitarian, meaning they only occasioanlly eat meat or fish. With this in mind, since 2017, we flag all wines on our wine lists that are Vegetarian or Vegan friendly.
Deliveries
Our delivery system is specifically set up to cater for a highly seasonal area of the Country. We are based in Poole, Dorset. Ideal to reach the highly seasonal Dorset coastline. 96% of our orders are delivered within 48 hours.
Order Capture
To reduce errors, we use either an order template system on email, or the new online system contained on this website which will go live in early 2024. You will need a trading account to use either. Please contact us as this can be set up within 24 hours.
Essentially all orders placed from Monday to Thursday are completed by Friday.
Each week as orders come, in we design the most environmentally friendly and efficient method of delivery. However the general delivery matrix is as follows.
Delivery days for BH post codes are Tuesday and Wednesday. DT post codes are delivered Thursday. That leaves Monday and Friday for the emergency orders, large pre-orders and one-off deliveries. The New Forest is delivered on a Wednesday. All post codes outside these areas are delivered on the pallex network which is a Day 1 for Day 3 delivery, whichever day your order is placed.
We are an approved supplier to Bournemouth (BCP) Council and have worked with them since 2010.
Emergency Orders
If your order is an emergency you will need to ring us and speak to us during office hours, to organise the best solution to get the wine to you. We are flexible but sometimes if all vehicles are committed, same day deliveries are impossible.
Collections are always possible, please phone ahead with your order. We do get very busy, so giving us an hours notice will save you waiting around whilst your order is picked. You can collect any time 9.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday.
Deliveries are made using our own fleet of vans, although we also use the Pallex network for deliveries further afield.
